HOTCUS 2019 Annual Conference: Call for Papers
Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, UK, 12-14 June 2019
Plenary Speaker: Professor Donna Murch (Rutgers University)
Historians of the Twentieth Century United States (HOTCUS) is delighted to invite paper and panel proposals for our 2019 annual conference. The conference will take place in the historic port city of Liverpool and will be hosted by Liverpool John Moores University. Liverpool has a long and complex history of relations with North America: the city was a major beneficiary of the trans-Atlantic slave trade; it was the home of the United States’ first ever foreign consulate; and it was one of the primary ports of transit for migrants lighting out for the New World.
Papers from members or non-members are welcomed on all topics concerning the history of the United States – broadly conceived – from 1890 to the present. The committee welcomes proposals for papers and panels covering all aspects of U.S. history, including (but not limited to):
- Citizenship, immigration, and migration
- Cultural and intellectual history
- Economic history
- Environmental history
- Foreign relations
- Gender and sexuality
- Native American history
- Political and policy history
- Race and racism
- Science and technology
- Urban history
Individual paper proposals and three-person panel proposals are equally welcomed. In order to address issues of representation and inclusion, panels composed entirely of male presenters will not be considered. HOTCUS would also especially welcome proposals from the BAME academic community, who have historically been under-represented at the conference. In order to widen participation, HOTCUS aims to offer a number of postgraduate and ECR travel bursaries. We also aim to offer a number of childcare bursaries to assist those with such responsibilities. These bursaries are subject to the availability of funding.
If submitting an individual paper, please send a brief CV (no more than two pages) and a 200-300-word abstract of the proposed paper. Panel proposals should contain a 200-300-word abstract for each paper and a brief CV (no more than two pages)for each participant in a single document. Panel chairs can either be included with the proposal or can be added by the HOTCUS organising committee.
Paper and panel proposals should be submitted to the HOTCUS Events Secretary Dr Malcolm Craig (email@example.com) by 8th February 2019.
